Trivia Night Match Report by Grunta
The Warriors came out to play at the Trivia Night on Saturday, with over 80 aspiring intelligentsia swarming the club rooms for an exquizite evening. I found myself in the last picked group with Dusty, Theo and should have been Al (he weaseled his way onto Lou’s table), and we took a spot on a tiny high table in the naughty corner. Matty D, despite tireless efforts in organising the event, was cruelly ousted from his own table but we are fully inclusive (and genuinely desperate) at the Benchwarmers and we welcomed Matt to the fold.
Daniel the quizmaster did a great job. This was my first club trivia night and I didn’t know what to expect, but I definitely didn’t expect Thorney grabbing someone’s crutch and gyrating wildly on the tabletop, or Eddie ripping his top off and dancing on his table. Apparently everyone else saw it coming. Unfortunately I can never unsee.
There was also some actual trivia. The Malakas got off to a flying start, and our undermanned Benchwarmers were on the podium at the end of the first round. But then in round 2 you could bet up to 50 points a question – get it right, win the points, get it wrong, lose the points. Never put the Greek in charge of governance – with Theo betting the farm, we emerged from Round 2 in last place and the only score in the negative (-34).
I can’t recall too many questions, but I remember there was one about what year Eddie started playing football, and one about what year Marco Polo first set sail for Asia, and both had the same answer – 1271.
Outside of the trivia, there were plenty of fun games including a coin toss, where not only was it difficult to land close to the target, you also had Killer strategically placed for in-your-face heckling. Just like training.
From Round 2 on, team Flea dominated the trivia, thanks in part to a question where Flea was the answer and she got it in one. But we’re not bitter… Team Flea emerged victorious, followed by Beefy Wong for the chocolates and Could’ve Would’ve in third.
We’re constantly innovating at the Warriors. Instead of overused, boring prizes like cash, holidays and cars, we turned to soy milk – not only are we on the cutting edge of global quiz events, we are dedicated to improving gut health. You don’t see that on The Chase.
The Flea Show cleaned up Saturday night, also winning multiple raffle prizes including the grand prize, a $1000 Bosch tool set donated by Bruisa. Seriously, there were some fantastic prizes donated for the night, and big thanks also to Flea, Andrew, Lin, Dennise, Fitzy, the Warriors Women’s team and others who contributed. Thanks also to Junior and Blake for manning the bar, Thorney, Herry for selling raffle tickets and all others who helped set up, clean up and deliver food, etc. during the evening.
Congratulations to the organisers, especially Matty D and Marko for organising tablkes and setting up the room, ordering meals, stocking the bar and even making new stools, and to Al for donating our new TV. Huge thanks to everyone who bought tickets and came along for a sellout event and a really fun night – the final audit is in the works but early indications are somewhere around $2000 in funds raised for the club. There was excellent representation from all four teams and so nice to see partners, family and friends joining players and coaches for a fun occasion. We all learnt that while we may not be very bright, we have a truly great Warriors community who know how to have fun together.
